Union work-detail digging out emplacements for the installation of a pair of heavy 10-inch mortars at Butler’s Crow’s Nest, near the Dutch Gap on the James River in Virginia, as part of the Gen. Benjamin F. Butler’s offensive against Petersburg in July 1864. Note the clevis-and-bolt hitches attached to the lug atop each three-ton iron mortar, for hoisting purposes, as well as the wooden observation-tower rising beyond the trees; original image has been cleaned and repaired
