Image description

cairo egyptian museum-sarcophagus of Shoshenk II-This silver sarcophagus takes the conventional shape of the mummified Osiris, but with theinnovation of having a hawk’s head in place of the human head. It belongs to King Shoshenk II, third king of the 22nd Dynasty, and was found in the tomb of Psusennes I. The hands, emerging from the mummy wrappings on the sarcophagus, hold the crook and flail–symbols of royalty, power and authority. Winged gods can be seen on the body, as well as the four sons of Horus. Four miniature silver sarcophagi were found with the sarcophagus, each was for one of the king’s internal organs; these, however, have human heads. cairo egyptian museum-sarcophagus of Shoshenk II-JE 72154-CEM24 09 09 001_02; silver; L. 190cm; 22nd Dynasty, Third Intermediate Period; Tanis; Upper Floor, Room 2
