This statue represents the king sitting on a low-backed throne, wearing a tripartite wig surmounted by the royal nemes-headdress. You can see Djoser’s strength and power in his face. He wears the heb-sed robe, a ceremonial garment worn during a royal ritual of renewal held after thirty years of rule or sometimes earlier. This festival was held to celebrate all that the king had accomplished, in order to transform him into a god. Djoser sits in a traditional royal pose found throughout Egyptian history: his left hand is placed upon his knee, while his right hand is held across his chest. The royal title of King of Upper and Lower Egypt can be seen on the base of the statue, along with images of the protector goddesses Nekhbet and Wadjet. This is followed by the king’s Horus name, Netjerykhet.
