Image description

Overhead diagram of a U.S. Army Model 1845 or M.1845 32-pounder seacoast gun mounted on a barbette carriage, a standard weapon used in major garrisons throughout antebellum and Civil War America, accompanied by a nomenclature which identifies its corresponding parts. Originally engraved for publication as Plate 12 between pages 59-60 of the Instruction for Heavy Artillery manual (Washington, DC: Gideon & Co., Printers, 1851), its stained and creased original has been repaired for modern republication. Original line-drawing attributed to Lt. Richard H. Rush of the 2nd U.S. Artillery Regiment; original copper engraving by David McClelland of Washington, D. C.
