Image description

Frederick Cecil Cracknell, Army Film and Photographic Unit, Giza,Egypt, 1942. Photograph, World War Two (1939-1945), 1942. No 1 Unit, Army Film and Photographic Unit, deployed to North Africa in 1942. It consisted of 32 film makers and still photographers under the command of Major David Macdonald. Newly arrived soldiers in Egypt generally spent time acclimatising in the Nile delta area before moving out into the desert. During this time they visited Cairo and the ancient monuments surrounding the city. They were joined by soldiers on leave from the front line, who were keen to visit and photograph Egypt’s historic landmarks. From an album compiled by F C Cracknell of the Army Film and Photographic Unit, 1941-1944.
