Video description

Assos was part of the ancient region of Troas. The fortification walls on the acropolis were probably built in Hellenistic times, but then were repaired in Byzantine and Turkish (Middle Ages) periods. The walls were fortified by monumental guarding towers presiding over the landscape. The Hellenistic construction was of a rusticated masonry type and no mortar was usually used between the building blocks. The further one proceeds from the acropolis southward towards the main western city gate, the more visible this Hellenistic masonry becomes.
