Image description

This stele depicts King Ptolemy V making an offering to the Buchis Bull. At the top of the stele can be seen a winged sun-disc, while below can be seen two recumbent jackals, seated either side of two rearing uraei. A djed-pillar of stability is between them, and a scarab above. Below is the main register of the stele: the Buchis bull stands on the left, above a platform; it wears two uraei, a sun-disc and two plumes. Behind, he is protected by the god Montu in the form of a hawk. Ptolemy stands to the right offering the hieroglyphic symbol for fields. Below are five rows of hieroglyphs running horizontally, describing the birth and life of the sacred bull. The Buchis bull was associated with the God Montu, and buried in the Bucheum at the site of Armant near Luxor. Reign of Ptolemy V Epiphanes (205-180 BC)
