Spiral galaxy NGC 3621 in Hydra - Galaxy NGC 3621 in Hydra - The spiral galaxy NGC 3621 is located about 22 million light years away from Earth in the southern constellation of Hydra. Image obtained from the 2.2 meter MPG/ESO telescope of the La Silla Observatory. Spiral galaxy NGC 3621 is located in the southern constellation Hydra at 22 million light years from the sun. Image taken with the Wide Field Imager on the MPG/ESO 2.2 - metre telescope at Eso's La Silla Observatory in Chile. This galaxy appears to be a fine example of a classical spiral but it is in fact rather unusual: it does not have a central bulge and is therefore described as a pure - disc galaxy
Spiral Galaxy M83 in Hydra - Spiral galaxy M83 in Hydra - The galaxy M83 (NGC 5236) is located about 15 million light years away from Earth in the constellation Hydra. This galaxy is intermediate between a classic spiral and a barree spiral. Image obtained in 2006 in several cumulative long poses, with a large amateur instrument, a 50 cm telescope. M83 (NGC 5236) is located in the southern constellation Hydra at 15 million light years from the sun. It is classified as intermediate between normal and barred spiral galaxies
Irregular galaxy NGC 6822 in Sagittarius - Irregular galaxy NGC 6822 in Sagittarius - The galaxy NGC 6822 is located about 1.8 million years ago - light from Earth. She belongs to our local group. Image obtained with Siding Spring's 3.9m telescope. NGC 6822 is one of the nearest galaxies to the milky Way and is thus a member of a small cluster known as the Local Group to which our Galaxy belongs. It is close enough to be resolved into individual stars, though because of its distance (about 1.8 million light years) only the brightest are seen, even with a telescope as powerful as the AAT. The galaxy seems to be without symmetry and is classified as an irregular. At one end of a prominent bar a few clouds of glowing gas can be seen; at the other, bright bluish stars are scattered out into what appears to be the first signs of a straggling spiral arm
Cocoon Nebula (IC 5146) in the Swan - Cocoon Nebula (IC 5146) in Cygnus - The Cocon Nebula, IC 5146, is an emission nebula located about 4000 years from Earth in the constellation of Swan. This star-forming region is illuminated by massive young stars. This complex mass of molecular hydrogen and dust, located 4,000 light years from earth, glows red by emitting light, shines blue by reflecting light and exhibits a pattern of dark lanes that result when dust absorbs light. Much of the light seen in the main part of this nebula is generated by the massive bright star near it's center. The Cocoon is a stellar nursery containing a relatively young open cluster of stars with several individual constituents that are newly formed
Interacting spiral galaxies Arp 87 - Interacting galaxies Arp 87 - This pair of interaction galaxies called Arp 87 is composed of the galaxy NGC 3808, on the right, and its companion NGC 3808A. Both are spiral galaxies. An arm of NGC 3808, consisting of dust, gas and stars, envelops his companion. The interaction of these galaxies causes intense star formation. Arp 87 is located 300 million light years from Earth in the constellation Lion. This image was taken by the Hubble Space Telescope in February 2007. Arp 87 is a stunning pair of interacting galaxies. Stars, gas, and dust flow from the large spiral galaxy, NGC 3808, forming an enveloping arm around its companion. The shapes of both galaxies have been distorted by their gravitational interaction. Arp 87 is located in the constellation of Leo, the Lion, approximately 300 million light - years away from Earth. Arp 87 appears in ARP's Atlas of Peculiar Galaxies. As also seen in similar interacting galaxies, the corkscrew shape of the tidal material suggests that some stars and gas drawn from the larger galaxy have been caught in the gravitational pull of the smaller one. This image was taken in February 2007 with Hubble's Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 detector
Spiral galaxy M33 in the Triangle - Spiral galaxy M33 in Triangulum - M33, (NGC 598), the galaxy of the Triangle, is located about 2 million years ago - light from Earth. It belongs to the local group, just like our galaxy or Andromede galaxy. Also known as M33 or NGC 598, the Triangulum Galaxy is part of the Local Group of galaxies, which includes the Andromeda Galaxy (M31) and our galaxy, the Milky Way. M33 is over thirty thousand light - years across, and more than two million light - years away. Hot, massive stars which recently formed in M33 give the galaxy its bluish color. The reddish areas are nebulae in the galaxy in which stars are rapidly forming
Star Birth in Scorpio - Stellar nursery in Scorpius - RCW 120 is a star-forming region about 4200 years from Earth in the constellation Scorpio. In the center a hot and massive star emits powerful ultraviolet radiation, which ionize the surrounding gas, tearing off electrons from the hydrogen atoms and producing the characteristic red glow of H - alpha emissions. As this ionized region extends into space, the associated shock wave meets the surrounding cold interstellar gas and cosmic dust. This gas becomes unstable and collapses under its own gravite forming dense, cold clouds or new stars will be born. These very cold clouds (- 250 degres Celsius) can only be detected in submillimetre wavelength; they appear here in blue thanks to the data obtained by the APEX telescope which observes this radiation. Illustrating the power of submillimetre - wavelength astronomy, an APEX image reveals how an expanding bubble of ionised gas about ten light - years across is causing the surrounding material to collapse into dense clumps that are the birthplaces of new stars. The region, called RCW120, is about 4200 light years from Earth, towards the constellation of Scorpius. A hot, massive star in its centre is emitting huge amounts of ultraviolet radiation, which ionises the surrounding gas, stripping the electrons from hydrogen atoms and producing the characteristic red glow of so - called H - alpha emission. Here, the submillimetre emission is shown as the blue clouds surrounding the reddish glow of the ionised gas (shown with data from the SuperCosmoS H - alpha survey). The image also contains data from the Second Generation Digitized Sky Survey (I - band shown in blue, R - band shown in red). As this ionised region expands into space, the associated shock wave sweeps up a layer of the surrounding cold interstellar gas and cosmic dust. This layer b

Orion's Nebula - The Great Nebula in Orion - Located 1500 light years from Earth, Orion's Nebula is the closest region to the formation of stars of the Sun. In its heart, a group of young stars called Orion's Trapeze. To the eye, the nebula appears as a misty patch around the central star of the line of three which form Orion's sword. The central group of stars is the Trapezium cluster and these stars are responsible for producing the nebula. It is the high concentration of dust and gas in this part of the sky which has resulted in the formation of the stars, so the Orion nebula is no random association of bright stars and dusty gas. At a distance of 1500 light years, the Orion nebula is the nearest star-forming region to the Sun
The Large Magellanic Cloud Irregular Galaxy - The Large Magellanic Cloud - The irregular galaxy of the Great Magellan Cloud is located approximately 160,000 light years away from Earth in the southern constellation of the Sea bream. Visible with the naked eye in the southern hemishere it is one of the closest galaxies to ours. The Large Magellanic cloud is about 160 000 light - years from Earth in the constellation Dorado. Naked - eye visible in the southern hemisphere, it is one of the nearest galaxy
Markarian Galaxy 273 - Galaxy Markarian 273 - The Markarian galaxy 273 is about 500 million light years away from Earth in the constellation of the Great Bear. The presence of a 130,000-year-long maree tail suggests that Markarian 273 is the fusion of two galaxies. The collision caused a burst of star formations. This galaxy has a double core and is one of the brightest infrared galaxies. Image obtained by the Hubble Space Telescope on November 16, 2001. Markarian 273 shows an intricate central region and a striking tail that extends diagonally towards the bottom - right of the image. The tail is about 130 thousand light - years long and is strongly indicative of a merger between two galaxies. Markarian 273 has an intense region of starburst, where 60 solar masses of new stars are born each year. Near - infrared observations reveal a nucleus with two components. Markarian 273 is one of the most luminous galaxies when observed in the infrared, and is located 500 million light - years away from Earth in the constellation of Ursa Major. Galaxy NGC 6670 in the Peacock - Galaxy NGC 6670 in Pavo - The galaxy NGC 6670, is about 400 million light years away from Earth in the southern constellation of Peacock. This system consists of two collision galaxies seen by the slice. Their nuclei are approximately 50,000 light years away. Image obtained by the Hubble Space Telescope on 30 October 2001. NGC 6670 is a gorgeous pair of overlapping edge - on galaxies. Scientists believe that NGC 6670 has already experienced at least one close encounter and is now in the early stages of a second. The nuclei of the two galaxies are approximately 50,000 light - years apart. NGC 6670 glows in the infrared with more than a hundred billion times the luminosity of our Sun and is thought to be entering a starburst phase. The pair is located some 400 million light - years away from Earth
Spiral galaxy M33 in the Triangle - Spiral galaxy M33 in Triangulum - M33, the galaxy of the Triangle is located about 2 million years from Earth. It belongs to the local group, just like our galaxy or Andromede galaxy. In red, star-forming regions appear. Image obtained from the Isaac Newton telescope of La Palma. M33 is a large, almost face - on spiral galaxy about 2.5 million light years distant in the northern constellation of Triangulum. It is a member of the 'Local Group' of galaxies, which is dominated by the Milky Way and M31. Like M31, M33 is approaching the Milky Way at a velocity of about 180km/s. Although the total light M33 galaxy is that of a star of magnitude 5.3, its large diameter makes it hard to see. However, despite its low surface brightness, this galaxy was among the first to be identified as a 'spiral nebula' by Lord Rosse in the 1840s. On shorter exposures, the nucleus appears very bright and almost stellar, like that in its southern cousin, NGC 300
Nebula Van den Bergh 93 (VdB 93) in Unicorn - Nebula Van den Bergh 93 (VdB 93) - VDB 93 is a star-forming region belonging to nebula IC 2177. The star SAO 152320, in the center of the image, illuminates this nebula located in the constellation Unicorn, about 4000 years old - light from Earth. Curtains of gas and dust dramatically open here to reveal the inner region of this starforming region. Unceremoniously named, bright star SAO 152320 shines with intense light in the center of this field. Clouds of gas glow strongly and dust shrinks quickly under its radiative prowess. This vista lies some 4,000 light years away towards the constellation of Monoceros. This is a portion of a much larger nebula called Gum 1
Barree spiral galaxy NGC 2146 in the Giraffe - Barred spiral galaxy NGC 2146 in Camelopardalis - NGC 2146 is a barree spiral galaxy located about 70 million years ago - light from Earth in the constellation Giraffe (Camelopardalis). Image obtained by the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). NGC 2146 is classified as a barred spiral due to its shape, but the most distinctive feature is the dusty spiral arm that has looped in front of the galaxy's core as seen from our perspective. The forces required to pull this structure out of its natural shape and twist it up to 45 degrees are colossal. The most likely explanation is that a neighbouring galaxy is gravitationally perturbing it and distorting the orbits of many of NGC 2146's stars. It is probable that we are currently witnessing the end stages of a process which has been occurring for tens of millions of years. NCG 2146 is undergoing intense bouts of star formation, to such an extent that it is referred to as a starburst galaxy. This is a common state for barred spirals, but the extra gravitational disruption that NGC 2146 is enduring no doubt exacerbates the situation, compressing hydrogen - rich nebulae and triggering stellar birth. Measuring about 80 000 light - years from end to end, NGC 2146 is slightly smaller than the Milky Way. It lies approximately 70 million light - years distant in the faint northern constellation of Camelopardalis (The Giraffe). Although it is fairly easy to see with a moderate - sized telescope as a faint elongated blur of light it was not spotted until 1876 when the German astronomer Friedrich Winnecke found it visually using just a 16 cm telescope. This picture was created from images taken with the Wide Field Channel of Hubble's Advanced Camera for Surveys. Images through a near - infrared filter (F814W, coloured blue and orange/brown) were combined with images taken in a filter that isolates the glow from hydrogen gas (F658N, coloured red). An additional green colour
Spiral galaxies NGC 3314 A and B in Hydra - Galaxy pair NGC 3314 in Hydra - NGC 3314 is a pair of spiral galaxies distant about 140 million years - Earth light. These galaxies are not interacting but just perfectly aligned in front of each other from Earth. Through an extraordinary chance alignment, a face - on spiral galaxy lies precisely in front of another larger spiral. This line - up provides us with the rare chance to visualize dark material within the front galaxy, seen only because it is silhouetted against the object behind it. NGC 3314 lies about 140 million light - years from Earth, in the direction of the southern hemisphere constellation Hydra. The bright blue stars forming a pinwheel shape near the center of the front galaxy have formed recently from interstellar gas and dust. In many galaxies, interstellar dust lies only in the same regions as recently formed blue stars. However, in the foreground galaxy, NGC 3314a, there are numerous additional dark dust lanes that are not associated with any bright young stars. A small, red patch near the center of the image is the bright nucleus of the background galaxy. It is reddened for the same reason the setting sun looks red. When light passes through a volume containing small particles (molecules in the Earth's atmosphere or interstellar dust particles in galaxies), its color becomes redder. The Hubble space telescope image of NGC 3314 was constructed from archival images taken in April 1999

NGC 6334 is one of the most active nurseries of massive stars in our galaxy and has been extensively studied by astronomers. The nebula conceals freshly minted brilliant blue stars - each nearly ten times the mass of our Sun and born in the last few million years. The region is also home to many baby stars that are buried deep in the dust, making them difficult to study. In total, the Cat's Paw Nebula could contain several tens of thousands of stars. The nebula appears red because its blue and green light are scattered and absorbed more efficiently by material between the nebula and Earth. The red light comes predominantly from hydrogen gas glowing under the intense glare of hot young stars
Spiral Galaxy M83 in Hydra - Spiral galaxy M83 in Hydra - The galaxy M83 (NGC 5236) is located about 15 million years away from Earth. This galaxy is intermediate between a classic spiral and a barree spiral Image obtained in 1995 with an amateur instrument, a 130 mm bezel. M83 (NGC 5236) is located in the southern constellation Hydra at 15 million light years from the sun. It is classified as intermediate between normal and barred spiral galaxies. Image obtained with a 130 mm refracting telescope
Spiral galaxy ESO 269 - 57 in Centaurus - Galaxy ESO 269 - 57 in Centaurus - The spiral galaxy ESO 269 - 57 is about 155 million years away - light from Earth. The picture shows the complex structure of ESO 269 - 57, with an inner “” ring””, of several tightly wound spiral arms, surrounded by two outer ones that appear to split into several branches. Many blue and diffuse objects are visible - most are star - forming regions. The galaxy type is Sa (r) and its distance is about 155 million light - years. It extends over about 4 arcmin in the sky, corresponding to almost 200,000 light - years across. Many other galaxies are visible in the background. This three - colour composite was obtained with VLT ANTU and FORS1 in the morning of March 27, 1999
Nebula NGC 3576 in Carene - Star formation region NGC 3576 in Carina - NGC 3576 is located about 7000 years - light from Earth in the constellation Carene. Image obtained by Siding Spring's 3.9m telescope. The stars that excite this unusual nebula, NGC 3576, are not visible on this photograph. They are hidden in the dusty cloud at the 'base' (south) of the huge loops of nebulosity. This is material that has been blown out by radiation pressure and stellar winds from the concealed stars. Silhouetted against the tenuous loops are dark clouds of dust with bright rims which indicate the direction of the stars which excite the nebula. This large complex of gas and dust is at about the same distance as the much brighter Eta Carinae nebula, about 7000 light years away
Barree spiral galaxy NGC 3259 in the Great Bear - Barred spiral galaxy NGC 3259 in Ursa Major - The barree spiral galaxy NGC 3259 is located about 110 million years away - light from Earth. This galaxy houses a black hole in its heart as well as large zones of star formation in its arms. This image was taken by the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). This classic shot of a galaxy in the constellation of Ursa Major was taken by the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope. NGC 3259 is a bright barred spiral galaxy located approximately 110 million light - years from Earth. Being a fully - formed active galaxy, its bright central bulge hosts a supermassive black hole, whose huge appetite for matter explains the high luminosity of the galaxy's core: as it devours its surroundings, the black hole emits intense radiation across the whole electromagnetic spectrum, including in visible light. The beautiful spiral arms of the galaxy are not left out either as they contain dark lanes of dust and gas, ideal spawning grounds for stars. These bright, young, hot stars appear in rich clusters in the galaxy's arms and are what gives the galaxy its blueish hue. Interestingly, the galaxy has a small companion (visible to the left of the image), a much smaller galaxy that may be orbiting NGC 3259. In the background, numerous distant galaxies can be seen, easily identifiable by their elliptical shapes. They are visible here mainly in infrared light, which is shown in red in this image
Detail of the Cone nebula in the Unicorn - The Cone Nebula (NGC 2264) - Detail - Image obtained by the Hubble space telescope of the upper part of the Cone nebula (NGC 2264), a star-forming region located about 2500 years ago - light from Earth. The Cone Nebula (NGC 2264) - - so named because, in ground - based images, it has a conical shape - - this giant pillar resides in a turbulent star - forming region. This picture, taken by the Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) aboard Nasa's Hubble Space Telescope, shows the upper 2.5 light - years of the nebula, a height that equals 23 million roundtrips to the Moon. The entire nebula is 7 light - years long. The Cone Nebula resides 2,500 light - years away in the constellation Monoceros. ACS made this observation on April 2, 2002. The color image is constructed from three separate images taken in blue, near - infrared, and hydrogen - alpha filters
Galaxy NGC 17 in the Whale - Galaxy NGC 17 in Cetus - The galaxy NGC 17 is located about 250 million years away from Earth. Presented with a single nucleus, its shape indicates that it has finished absorbing another galaxy. Image obtained by the Hubble Space Telescope on 4 July 2002. This galaxy features a single nucleus, a containing a blue central disk with delicate fine structure in the outer parts and tidal tails indicative of two former disk galaxies. At present these galaxies appear to have completed their merger. The remnant shows clear signs that the merger was gas - rich and accompanied by a starburst. NGC 17 is gas - rich and can sustain its strong central starburst and present mild central activity for some time to come. NGC 17 is located about 250 million light - years away in the constellation of Cetus, the Whale. Image taken by the Hubble space telescope on july 4, 2002
Spiral galaxy NGC 6744 in the constellation Peacock - Spiral galaxy NGC 6744 in Pavo - The galaxy NGC 6744 is about 25 million years away - light from Earth. Image obtained with a telescope of 35 cm, 12 hours of poses. NGC 6744 is a majestic spiral galaxy in the southern constellation of Pavo. It has great similarities to the Milky Way galaxy in both form and structure. It lies at a distance of approximately 25 million Light Years. At its northern tip NGC 6744 is interacting with a dwarf companion galaxy much in the same way the Milky Way interacts with the Large Magellanic Cloud. The northernmost spiral arm is most likely being stretched and its stars and gas stripped due to tidal pull from the dwarf companion. Likewise the stars of the companion will likely be engulfed and the companion will ultimately merge with NGC 6744 at a far off future time. Image taken with 14.5”” RCOS telescope, 12 Hours of exposure
Irregular galaxy NGC 6822 in Sagittarius - Irregular galaxy NGC 6822 in Sagittarius - The galaxy NGC 6822 is about 1.6 million years away - light from Earth. She belongs to our local group. Image obtained with a telescope of 35 cm, 12 hours of poses. The irregular dwarf galaxy NGC 6822 is located at only 1,6 million light year. It is a member of our local group and the third nearest galaxy to the Milky Way after the Sagittarius Dwarf Elliptical and the Magellanic Clouds. The galaxy was discovered by Barnard in 1881 using a 6 inch refractor. It is very similar to the LMC with its weak bar and its irregular distribution of bright OB associations and HII regions. In 1925 in a classic paper, Edwin Hubble reported on several bright objects in NGC 6822, later found to represent a grouping of bright star clusters and HII regions. The galaxy is rich in neutral hydrogen gas, the essential fuel of star formation. NGC 6822 started forming stars some 10 billion years ago. Similar to the LMC it has a large intermediate age population of stars of about 3 billion years old, although the galaxy has picked up its star forming rate over the last 100 to 200 million years. Prominent HII regions and scattered clusters of young blue stars are testament to its current constant rate of star formation. Image taken with 14.5”” RCOS telescope, 12 Hours of exposure
Galaxies M81 and M82 in the Great Bear - Galaxies M81 and M82 in Ursa Major: M81 (left) is a spiral galaxy. M82 (right) an irregular galaxy. Separate about 150,000 light years, these two galaxies belong to the galaxy cluster closest to our local group. These galaxies are approximately 12 million light years away from Earth. - M81, seen here at left, is a grand design spiral galaxy that forms a physical pair with irregular galaxy M82. They are separated by 150,000 light years at a distance of 12 million light years
Interacting galaxies NGC 6090 - Interacting galaxies NGC 6090 - The galaxy NGC 6090 is located about 400 million light years away from Earth in the constellation of the Dragon. This interacting galaxy consists of two spiral galaxies whose nuclei are distant from 10,000 light years. This system is halfway through its merger process. Image obtained by the Hubble Space Telescope on November 12, 2005. NGC 6090 is a beautiful pair of spiral galaxies with an overlapping central region and two long tidal tails formed from material ripped out of the galaxies by gravitational interaction. The two visible cores are approximately 10,000 light - years apart, suggesting that the two galaxies are at an intermediate stage in the merging process. The Hubble image reveals bright knots of newborn stars in the region where the two galaxies overlap. The right hand component has a clear spiral structure if viewed face - on, while the other is seen edge - on with no spiral arms visible. NGC 6090 is located in the constellation of Draco, the Dragon, about 400 million light - years away from Earth. A number of fainter, and more distant, background galaxies is seen in the image. Image taken by the Hubble space telescope on November 12, 2005
Large Magellanic Cloud galaxy - Large Magellanic Cloud galaxy - The Great Magellan Cloud galaxy is located about 160,000 light-years from Earth in the southern constellation of Dorado. Visible with the naked eye in the southern hemishere it is one of the closest galaxies to ours. The irregular galaxy Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) is located at a distance of 160,000 light years in the southern constellation of Dorado. It is one of the nearest galaxy, visible to naked eye.
Barree spiral galaxy NGC 6744 in the constellation Peacock - Barred spiral galaxy NGC 6744 in Pavo - The galaxy NGC 6744 is located about 25 million years ago - light from Earth. Image obtained from the 3.9m telescope of Siding Spring, Australia. This beautiful galaxy is about 25 million light years away in the direction of Pavo, a constellation of the southern hemisphere winter. It sits in a rich starfield, and is strongly inclined to our line of sight. NGC 6744 is believed to one of the most Milky Way - like of all the nearby spirals, with fluffy (flocculent) spiral arms and a large and distinctly elongated nucleus. It also has other similarities to the Milky Way that are not visible here with at least one distorted companion galaxy superficially similar to one of the Magellanic Clouds
