Image description

This uraeus was discovered by Petrie in 1920 during his work around the Pyramid of Senusret II at Lahun. The rearing cobra, known as a uraeus, was a symbol of royalty, worn at the forehead. This piece was thus likely part of a headdress or crown. It is made from gold with additions of precious stones. It was believed that the uraeus was the Goddess Wadjet of Upper Egypt in the form of a cobra, and that it would spit fire at enemies. Reign of Senusret II (1897-1878 BC)
