Video description

Located in the Lycia Region, near the modern village of Demre, the famous rock-tombs of Myra are in two main groups, one on the cliff above the theater and the other in a place called the River Necropolis on the eastern side. The rock-carved tombs seen in the video belong to the Sea Necropolis, located on the cliff west of the theater. When the tombs were discovered in the 19th Century, many of them were found colorfully painted with red, yellow and blue pigments. The large number of rock-cut tombs is strewn all across the cliff face in an asymmetrical pattern. Some are house-type tombs, while others are temple-like tombs. Most of the tombs were carved in the 4th Century BC, many of which feature funerary scenes in relief, or scenes from the deceased person's daily life.
