Image description

cairo egyptian museum-relief showing Akhenaten and his family-This relief was discovered within the royal tomb at Tell el-Amarna; it depicts the king and queen offering lotus flowers to the god Aten. The Aten itself is shown as a sun-disc, its rays ending with human hands providing life and prosperity. Behind the king and queen, their eldest daughter, Meritaten can be seen holding a sistrum with one hand, and holding the hand of her younger sister Meketaten with the other. The two are depicted wearing long transparent dresses, in the typical style of the Amarna Period. Each figure has thick lips, flabby stomachs, large ears, and narrow eyes. Nefertiti is wearing a long wig and a crown with a uraeus, surmounted by two horns, a sun-disc, and two long plumes. There is a clear similarity between the faces of Akhenaten and his family. The scene is accompanied by prayers to the Aten, and the titles and names of each member of the royal family. cairo egyptian museum-relief showing Akhenaten and his family-TR 10.11.26.4 a; painted limestone; H. 53cm; 18th Dynasty, New Kingdom; Tell el-Amarna; Ground Floor, Hall 8
