Inspired by Rysbrack's bust of King Alfred (‘The Great’) (846/9 – 899) also at Stourhead. Alfred's Tower had been built on the outer perimeter of the landscape garden commemorating the site where it was supposed the king had encamped when fighting the Danes in 879AD and to celebrate the accession of George III in 1760 as well as the end of the Seven Years War in 1763.
