Image description

Creator: Alan Villiers Kuwait was walled on the landward side and had been so since the conflict with the Ikhwan warriors of neighbouring Najd in 1920, when the wall and 31 towers had been hastily erected to enclose not just the city but much open space besides. There were just five gates through the 6.5 kilometre wall, enabling Beduin access to be carefully controlled.
