Image description

Presumed portrait of Charlotte-Françoise Bergeret de Norinval Vigée-Lebrun, Marie-Louise-Elisabeth; Fragonard, Jean-Honoré The identity of the model is still uncertain. An early inscription in ink on the back of the painting states that the model's name is "Madame de Norenval, lectrice de Marie-Antoinette". Although she was never Marie-Antoinette's lectrice, the model in this portrait could be the wife of Adélaïde-Etienne Bergeret de Norinval, nephew of Pierre-Jacques Onésyme Bergeret de Grancourt, Fragonard's friend and protector (cf. Burollet, Thérèse, 2004, p.115-116). Inscription concerning the model - On the back, old inscription in ink: "Madame de Norenval, lectrice de Marie-Antoinette". Stamp - Carved wooden frame bearing the stamps of cabinetmakers Henri Létonné and L. V. Bligny. Inventory number: J 30
