Inscription - On reverse, label affixed to mount: "Vue de la maison de mon grand père / maternel, Ph. Lucas, rue de la Mare, 1,3,5 / (anc.96 [?] et 21.) XXº arrt. / Souvenir d'un épisode de la Commune de / Paris 1871. Abbé Petit, priest (curé ou vicaire?) of / the parish of N.D. de la Croix lived in this house; the federates, after searching in vain / for Abbé Petit in the church, came to search the building. / The abbé had fled, and the federates wanted to / shoot my grandfather and set fire to the house. / A barrel of petrol can be seen near the door. / The intervention of an influential federate, a former / tenant, saved my grandfather's life, and the house was spared. Sur la fuite de l'abbé / Petit voy H. Cahiat : un épisode de la Commune de Paris au quartier Ménilmontant Montauban / 1879. in 16. / This painting, made by a tenant / of the house who witnessed the events, was given / by him to my grandfather, at whose house I always / saw it as a child. My mother received it as part of her inheritance, then I as part of mine. It / was framed with a simple baguette, once gilded. / I had this frame replaced in 1905. I wish / that the painting, when my wife and I / have disappeared, be offered to the Carnavalet museum / as a Parisian souvenir. / May 31, 1927. [signed] A Vidier.
