KEKCHI INDIANS LINE UP WOODEN CASKETS WITH REMAINS OF MASSACRE VICTIMS, 1998-05-30 (photo)

Kekchi Indians from the Guatemalan town of Panzos line up wooden caskets on May 29 during a burial ceremony for the victims of a massacre that happened 20 years ago, during the height of this country's long civil war. Approximately 100 people died in the massacre, which the people of Panzos blame on the army. The war ended in 1996 with a peace treaty between the government and leftist rebels, but it was not until recently that the town of Panzos exhumed the mass grave where the massacre victims were buried, tried to identify their dead, and reburied them in a special ceremony on the twentieth anniversary of the war crime.
