Image description

This is Rubens’ copy of Raphael’s much admired portrait of the sixteenth-century courtier Baldessare Castiglione. Rubens would certainly have known Castiglione’s celebrated manual of court life, The Courtier, since he worked for the Dukes of Mantua in Italy, and was an occasional diplomat for the King of Spain. This painting is a homage to Castiglione, as well as a form of rivalry with Raphael. Rubens changed several details of Raphael’s composition: for instance he fully included Castiglione’s hands in his portrait.
