Oil painting on canvas, John de Warenne, 6th Earl of Surrey (Earl of Surrey and Sussex, Earl Warenne) (1231-1304), giving his answer to the King's Justices on the Enforcement of the Statute of Quo Warranto, 1278 by Robert Edge Pine (London 1730 Philadelphia 1788). The source of the story is Rapin whose name appears after the note in the Society of Artist's exhibition catalogue (ie. Paul de Rapin-Thoyras, Histoire d'Angleterrre, 1727). A label on the reverse of the picture records, "This picture was sent by Elizabeth Harriet, the Viscountess Bulkeley after the death of her husband to Caroline Warren for her husband Admiral Sir John Borlase Warren and thence to thier daughter Hon. Frances Maria Vernon nee Warren (wife of the 4th Lord Vernon) to whom it now belongs Nov.1822. The said Lady Vernon allowing this picture to remain at Stapleford Hall during my natural life. After my decease the said Frances Maria Vernon or her heirs will direct the further disposal of it. It being her sole property and only sent to me Caroline Warren Stapleford Hall Nov.1822."
