In 1912, Peploe moved back to Edinburgh after two years in Paris. The vibrant, un-naturalistic colours and bold strong lines of this still-life differ greatly from his earlier impressionistic works. Peploe’s new experiments were inspired by his Parisian experiences alongside the Fauves and the spatial values introduced to the Parisian avant-garde by Picasso and the Cubists. When paintings from that series were exhibited in Glasgow in the 1910s, they caused a sensation.
