This cardboard, said to the two elephants, engraved by A.Souze and bound by Lenègre, is the most famous and widespread binding of the Hetzel collection for the series of Extraordinary Voyages by J. Verne. The motifs appear in gold on a first dish that was originally made in 7 shades: cauldron, lilac, green, brown, blue, purple, or as here red. Displayed between 1876 and 1890, these covers present in the centre of the cardboard a fan, in which the title Voyages Extraordinary by Jules Verne appears. Under the fan a cartridge containing the title (s) of the book. All around, 4 medallions depicting scenes from the series of extraordinary journeys (two on either side of the title, one on the bottom, framed by lying books, foliage, a globe and an inkcrib with a feather. The fourth medallion is at the top, framed by two elephant heads with the hanging trunk.
