Woman working in the ricefield plantation near Kiet Ngong, Laos. Rice cultivation methods drastically accelerate climate change. For more than 3 billion people - half the world's population - rice is their most important source of food. Its cultivation generates huge amounts of methane, a greenhouse gas. In addition, about 5,000 liters of water are needed to produce 1 kg of rice. Agriculture generates between 10 and 12% of greenhouse gases and 47% of methane (CH4) emissions, while rice cultivation in flooded fields can be attributed between 5 and 20% of the total methane emissions. Despite this considerable impact, the sector has hardly been the subject of campaigns to reduce its social and environmental footprint, as has happened with palm oil, soy or sugar crops.
