Image description

Second Pattern Victoria percussion carbine for East India Company cavalry and artillery, 1843 (c). During the 19th century, carbines were shorter, lighter firearms used by cavalry and artillery units. A full-length musket or rifle, as used by foot soldiers, was too heavy and awkward to fire from horseback. Most carbines of the first half of the 19th century were less accurate and powerful than the longer weapons of the infantry, due to a shorter sight plane and the lower velocity of bullets fired from the shortened barrel.
