Sketch and watercolour by Major General (later Field Marshal Lord) Sir Henry Seymour Rawlinson (1864-1925) from an album of sketches, 1909-1910.
Henry Rawlinson would become most famous for his role in the First World War, especially during the Battle of the Somme in 1916. However, before the war he toured France, Russia, China, Japan and southern Asia compiling a sketchbook of drawings. During his visit to China he sketched and painted landscapes, buildings and local personalities. At the time of his tour he was commander of 2nd Infantry Brigade.
