Image description

‘A Canadian cook making tea in the line. A stretcher bearer is waiting for his share’, 1916 circa. Photograph, World War One, Western Front (1914-1918), 1916 circa. Tea was an essential item for British and Commonwealth troops at the front. The daily ration was supposed to be 0.63 ounces (18 grams) of tea. It usually came in compact pellets or loose in packets that could be dropped into boiling water and then stored in a soldier’s pack. From an album of 54 photographs that belonged to Mr Herbert Cawthorne who served with a Canadian Regiment.
