Image description

‘The sniper finds his mark! Stretcher-bearers remove a wounded officer hit by an unlucky bullet’, 1915 circa. Photograph, World War One, Western Front, 1915 circa. Although most casualties on the Western Front were caused by artillery and machine-gun fire, snipers took a constant toll on front line units. Showing oneself above a front-line trench or moving carelessly through exposed communication trenches was to invite the attention of enemy snipers who were always on the look out for targets. From a collection of 101 stereoscopic photographs entitled ‘The Great War’.
