Image description

The bowl in the drawing was one of a number discovered in April 1816 during improvement works near the River Witham near Washingborough in Lincolnshire. The bowl was exhibited in London in 1850, and it may have been during this time that the drawing was produced, probably by the Society's draughtsman Robert Stothard. The bowl was last displayed in Leeds in 1868 and has since disappeared. The bowl is believed to have dated from the end of the eighth or early ninth centuries AD.
