Image description

Alexis-Simon Belle (Paris 1674 – Paris 1734). Oil painting on canvas, Princess Louisa Maria Theresa Stuart (1692–1712) by Alexis-Simon Belle (Paris 1674 – Paris 1734), circa 1708-10. A three-quarter-length portrait of Princess Louise in scarlet robe with white bodice. The daughter of Siz.P.17 and Siz.P.18. The only surviving daughter and last child of James II and Mary of Modena, she died young of smallpox. This portrait was probably painted around 1708–10, when marriage to a grandson of Louis XIV was mooted – hence her being shown fingering orange-blossom. Belle’s pendant of her brother, James III (Government Art Collection), was also at Sizergh until the unfortunate sale of 1896. Sizergh Castle, Cumbria
