The Duchess of Lauderdale's bedroom, Ham House. The Duchess, Elizabeth Maitland (1626-1698), was married to John Maitland (1616-1682), a member of the Restoration 'Cabal' which supported the rule of Charles II. Ham House, in Richmond, was the Duchess' first house, and was built in 1610. From A Short History of the English People, by J.R. Green, Vol. IV, published by Macmillan and Co., London, 1894.
