Image description

Great Exhibition 1851 Portaits of Victoria and Albert, 1851. Front page to 'The Great Exhibition prize essay' by J C Whish, published in London in 1851. The prize was 'for the best essay on the moral and religious tendency of the union of all nations at the Great Exhibition', held in the same year. Prince Albert (1819-1861) married his first cousin, Queen Victoria (1819-1901), in 1840. He planned and managed the 'Great Exhibition of the Works of the Industry of all Nations', housed in the Crystal Palace in Hyde Park, London. Profits from the exhibition funded the building of the South Kensington museums in Exhibition Road. In 1857 Albert was given the title Prince Consort and became the Queen's private advisor, but died suddenly of typhoid in 1861. The Queen wore mourning for the rest of her life. ©SSPL/Science Museum
