Image description

Geological map of the world', 1850. One of a set of teaching cards published by James Reynolds & Sons, London, England around 1850. Titled 'Geological Map of the World', the chart was drawn and engraved by John Emslie. The map shows the worldwide distribution of various rock types. These are listed under the headings of alluvium (sedimentary), igneous (primary, secondary & tertiary), metamorphic (changed) and volcanic. The chart is filled with inset illustrations showing different types of geological landforms such as coral reefs and volcanoes. The map follows the tradition established by William Smith who published the first detailed geological map of Britain in 1815. ©SSPL/Science Museum
