Video description

The various footage within this film which is in 2 clear sections, illustrate both colonial and traditional Burmese village life. The Europeans attend markets, have their photos taken, run timber yards and engage in ventriloquism as part of their social life. The local Burmese are undertaking labour activity, such as working in oil-fields, selling agricultural produce, and construction, as well as enjoying a social life with dancing and community celebration. (00.14 to 01.14) Caption - Kalaw. Sequence at a country open air vegetable market. Shots of the stall holders and their goods. Mrs Geoghegan makes a purchase. A local woman takes fright at the sight of the camera and runs away to hide behind a tree. Later she is shown posing for camera. She then moves off down a busy village street carrying her produce in a large basket carrier which is on her back. On the street, another women is shown carrying what looks like a large bale of hay on her back. (01.15 to 02.17) At a bungalow in the country, European adults are having their photograph taken and then are shown playing some sort of game. (2.18 to 2.40) Various shots of a Pagoda, its bridge approach and a large lake or moat running alongside its edge within parkland. (02.42 to 03.48) Various shots of a large oil-field on a hillside. Footage of the road through the oil field and detailed shots of the oil derricks, and then local people working on them. 2nd clip [12:46 mins duration] (00.00 to 00.11) A traditional wooden oil pump jack derrick in action. (00.12 to 01. 00) A crowded but open river bank with large number of local people displaying their agricultural produce for sale. Possibly a rural market seen from a riverside steamer. (01.00 to 01.12) A crowded river craft, with one single sail, is shot from the deck of a passing river ferry. Creator: Eric Geoghegan
