Image description

King Edward Bridge was built to provide a loop with the High Level Bridge over the River Tyne. Trains from the south to Newcastle no longer had to reverse out of Central Station on their return journey. The bridge was designed by Charles A Harrison for the North Eastern Railway. It was opened by King Edward VII on July 10th 1906. This view is from the Gateshead bank, and shows cranes and massive stones on a construction jetty in the Tyne. Ethel Kirkpatrick produced watercolours and woodcut prints of views of various places around the country.
