Image description

Mamokhele Mono Motaung (C) her husband Kali Motaung (R) and daughter Nomoki (L) stand next to the granite headstone of her mother's grave on the 40th anniversary of the Sharpeville killings south of Johannesburg March 21. The Sharpeville massacre in 1960 horrified the world and sealed South Africa's status as a pariah state. Motaung was barely three years old when her young mother was among the scores of people shot by police during a peaceful demonstration against infamous pass laws. Sixty nine people were killed in the shootings. JN/GB
