Martinez was released into Vallaure's custody by the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service following his retrial on double murder charges. He was given the death penalty in 1997 for killing Sherry McCoy, which sparked protests by Spain's King Juan Carlos and Pope John Paul II.
