Rev. Miguel Angel Cortez, a priest at the Catholic church built at the site where Juan Diego is believed to have lived in the 1500s, points to a wall that once was a part of the humble adobe house in Cuautitlan Izcalli, a neighborhood north of Mexico City, June 7, 2002. Juan Diego, whose sightings of the Virgin Mary in 1531 generated one of Mexico's central cultural and religious symbols, the Virgin of Guadalupe, is scheduled to be canonized on July 31 when Pope John Paul II visits Mexico for the fifth time. Cortez expects the canonization will bring a new flood of visitors to the ruins of Juan Diego's house. Although they are not supposed to, some pilgrims to the site take handfuls of dirt from the crumbled walls or even eat some of the dirt from the old adobe bricks.
