Image description

This is the first version of Hemy's large oil of 1903, exhibited at The Royal Academy in 1903 (no. 89) and now in the Maritime Museum, Hartlepool. It was Hemy's frequent practice to devise his largest subjects in vivid sketches before developing them into his more carefully worked oils. A critic for The Times remarked that the finished oil was ‘…beyond all question his masterpiece.’ The graceful racing yacht was the Barbara, named after one of his daughters, and the crew are three of his six sons. They are turning hard to windward from a broad reach, with a reef in the main and both headsails set, whilst another yacht on the horizon is on the other tack in the opposite direction.
