McGhie's House, Douglas, Isle of Man, 1932-34 (b/w photo)

On the back of this photograph John James Frowde writes, "McGhies's House, which appears in every photograph of the town from the Head during the last 72 years & is very prominent in the photo of the old Fort rampart (1860) 'And the tree at the Peveril Corner', article by Mr Archie Knox in 'Mannin', Vol 2, no 3, May 1914, p.184. 'In Wilson's time' he had the run[?] of Harold Tower (Sheffield. Yes there about 1880) - saw thence -'the Tuscan tower on the Red pier, the tree at the Peveril corner, the back of Sand Street, at Saana (?) & beyond bushes and trees of the country.' Well, the tree is in the picture, but the bole, some 8" through, had been sawn off sometime. 'Yet there is hope of a tree if it be cut down' - and it is still there. Saana - enquire, new to me. See place names."
