Dr. Lewis Feuchtwanger published A popular treatise on gems in 1859, a weighty tome bearing his considerable experience as a prominent chemist and mineralogist. Bavarian-born, Dr. Feuchtwanger arrived in the United States in 1829, and soon shifted his area of professional interest from the practice of medicine to the collection and dissemination of precious and semi-precious stones. This brightly illustrated image, intended to assist “the teacher, the lapidary, the jeweler, and the amateur,” accompanied a comprehensive description of the elements of mineralogy and a rigorous system of classification for gems.
