Image description

Postman butterfly, Heliconius melpomene was one of the first butterfly species observed to forage for pollen, a behavior that is common in other insect groups but rare in butterflies. Butterfly specimens in collection of The Butterfly Place, Westford, Massachusetts. After natural death the specimens were images directly on a scanner by Harold Feinstein. From the lepidopteran order, these winged insects are admired for the color and design diversity on their fragile wings.
