Image description

British (English) School. Oil painting on canvas, William Spencer Cavendish, 6th Duke of Devonshire (1790-1858), British (English) School, possibly Martin Shee, circa 1806/9. A three-quarter-length porrait, facing half right, wearing a dark grey coat with fur collar, his right hand on his hip; a dog, left, with collar inscribed 'Lord Hartin(gton)'. He was styled Lord Hartington before he succeeded in 1811 so the inscription on the dog's caollar refers to this Hardwick Hall, Derbyshire (Accredited Museum)
