Image description

The Hammer. Early Stone Hammer. The earliest hammer was probably the hammerstone which, held in the hand, was used to chip implements of flint. In the later Neolithic Age, mallets or axehammers of polished stone were used, the heads being either grooved and tied to the handles, or perforated like the hammer-heads of to-day. Steam Hammer. This powerful tool was invented by Nasmyth of Manchester, about 1839, and a working model of his hammer may be seen in the S Kensington Museum. The Bethlehem Iron Co of Pennsylvania erected a hammer weighing 125 tons, but subsequently replaced it by a 14,000 ton hydraulic press as being more efficient for large forgings. Illustration for one of a set of cigarette cards on the subject of Past & Present issued by Wills in 1929.
