Debucourt, Philibert Louis The painter has faithfully depicted the Place des Halles, to the east of the chevet of Saint-Eustache church, as it looked at the end of the Ancien Régime. To the right, the composition's dominant feature is the Pilori, with its high, pointed roof, where bankers, beggars and insolent valets were exposed. At the center of the composition, the Fontaine des Halles, dating from 1605. Behind the pillory and fountain, the two long buildings are the tidal market on the right and the salt market on the left.
