The Adventures of Baron Munchausen' illlustrated by Alphonse Adolphe Bichard (b. 1841). Caption reads: 'The ducks were still alive and strong; they had recovered from their fright at being thus captured, and began to struggle to fly away. Their efforts lifted me from the earth using the tails of my coat as oars, I guided my course through the air. ' Based on the life of Karl Friedrich Hieronymus, Baron (Freiherr) von Münchhausen (11 May 1720-22 February 1797) and his fantastical tales. This version is based on the German translation from the English by Gottfried August Bürger in 1786, from Raspe's original stories. (Rudolf Erich Raspe (1737-1794), the first author to transcribe Munchausen's war stories into a book. )
