Image description

Triumph of Catholic Doctrine (Trionfo della dottrina cattolica), by Andrea di Bonaiuto, 1365-1367, 14th Century, fresco. Whole artwork view. The fresco is divided into two registers; in the centre of the upper one Saint Thomas Aquinas stands out sitting on a throne, depicted as a Dominican friar, who holds an open book in front of him; in high, in a dark sky, theological and cardinal Virtues' allegories fly; at the fresco protagonist's sides sit ten figures of saints and evangelists, all of them in differently coloured clothes and with a book in their hands; at the feet of the throne three defeated heretics are crouched; the lower register is occupied by a line of fourteen decorated stalls that frame as many female figures; the first seven on the left represent the holy Sciences, while the others are the Liberal arts; at each female figure's feet sits a character who distinguished him/herself in the corresponding discipline; some of these characters are religiouses, a lot of them hold an object in their hands Andrea di Bonaiuto Church of Santa Maria Novella
