Pictorial Envelope: 1 envelope; 3 x 5 1/2 in. Portraits of Jesse B. Fre?mont and John C. Fre?mont with crossed American flags between them. Cream envelope with colored ink. Images on top. Printed above image: 'J. M. Whittemore & Co., Boston.' Printed between portraits: 'WE STAND BY THE / UNION.' John Charles Frémont (January 21, 1813 - July 13, 1890) was a Union Major General during the American Civil War. Prior to the war, he acted as the Military Governor of California, for which he was convicted of mutiny in court-martial. He also served as a U.S. Senator from California. After the war, he served as the 5th Territorial Governor of Arizona. Jessie Ann Benton Frémont (May 31, 1824 - December 27, 1902) was the wife of John Charles Frémont. She was considered one of his closest advisers of war-related matters. About the Creator: The main proprietor of J. M. Whittemore & Co. likely was James M. Whittemore, a Boston-based publisher that operated during the American Civil War.
