Image description

After Italian astronomer Giovanni Schiaparelli charted channels on Mars, American astronomer Percival Lowell misinterpreted the Italian “channel” to mean canals. In 1894, he suggested that the canals must have been the work of intelligent beings and the possibility of life on Mars captured American imaginations. Lithography by A. Hoen & Co., Richmond, Virginia.
