William Jenifer Powell (July 27, 1897 – July 12, 1942), American engineer, soldier, aviator and civil rights acitvist (right, with unidentified man) is standing in front of the left rear fuselage of the first aircraft purchased by the Bessie Coleman Aero Club and the Bessie Coleman Flying School in Los Angeles, both of which focused on promoting aviation in the African American community. He also sponsored the first all-black air show in 1931. The Club emblem is positioned below the rear cockpit cowling.
