Image description

Designed by the architects Benjamin Dean Wyatt (1775-1848/50) and George Blaquire (fl.1815). In the immediate aftermath of Waterloo, numerous memorials to the battle were proposed, although most remained unrealised. Among them was this design for a huge pyramid, as high as St Paul's Cathedral, which would commemorate the Napoleonic Wars in general and the contribution of both the army and the navy. This watercolour was sent to the Prince Regent for his consideration, but the pyramid was never built. The architects suggested that the memorial would take five years to build and would cost up to one million pounds.
