Yagua tribe located near Iquitos, Amazonian, Peru. Fires in the Amazon rainforest are accelerating climate change and endangering the lives of many tribes. The Amazon rainforest is the largest region of tropical forest on the planet. 3 million people live in some 380 indigenous communities that speak 86 languages and 650 dialects, with lifestyles and livelihoods intrinsically related to the conservation of the forest and its biodiversity. This natural jewel is disappearing because of the flames. As the number of fires increases, greenhouse gas emissions increase, the global temperature of the planet increases and extreme weather events such as major droughts become more frequent. Fires release large amounts of soot and pollutants into the atmosphere, including particles and toxic gases such as carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides and non-methane volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that are harmful to health.
