Phrygians crossing the Bosphorus from Europe into Asia. The Phrygians were a group of Indo-European tribes, akin to the inhabitants of Thrace, from which region they crossed the Bosphorus into Asia Minor at an early period. The racial movement, of which their migration formed a part, may well have had some share in putting an end to the Hittite domination of Anatolia. They possessed a knowledge of iron, but on their first settlement in Asia were in a semi-barbaric state of culture. Illustration for Hutchinson's History of the Nations (Hutchinson, c.1920).
